A STUDY ON THE STRATEGY OF TRANSLATING ENGLISH IDIOMS IN THE NOVEL LORD OF THE RINGS “THE TWO TOWERS” INTO INDONESIAN %K %X Translation is a complicated process, however a translator who concern with the transferring of the meaning will find that the target language has a way in which the desired meaning can be expressed, eventhough it may be very different from the source language form. There are two kinds of translations, they are literal and idiomatic translation. Literalism can only be avoided by careful analysis of the source language, understanding clearly the message to communicate. Idiomatic translations use the natural forms of the target language and the basic overriding principle is that an idiomatic translation reproduces the meaning of the source language that is the meaning intended by the original communicator. Idiom is sequence of words whose meaning cannot predicted from the meaning or the words themselves and combination of words which has a meaning as a whole. The aims of this study are (1) to analyze the types and adjustment of idioms are found in the source language their translation into the Target Language (2) to analyze the strategies for translating English idiomsof the novel into Indonesian.
