Politeness Maxim Violation by the Students of Mechanical Engineering Politeknik Negeri Bali

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the violation of politenss maxims by the students’s utterances of Mechanical Engineering Politeknik Negeri Bali and at identifying which utterances are consider violated based on the six maxim of politeness. In the descriptive qualitative research, this research was applied Leech’s theory of politeness principle in the finding to answer the questions. The violation by the people when they are conveying the message occured based on one’s reason and can be observed by take a look at the available context. Of all the reason behind violation, politeness is one of them. It is important to maintain a good relationship between speaker and hearer to avoid hurting each other’s feelings. The results show that the violations found in the data were 11 data, those are; tact maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, and agreement maxim. The context of speech is also very helpful for students to speak politely for example most of the contexts indicate that the students contact their friendsso that when they are conveying the utterances sometimes violated the maxim of politeness because of their social distance which relatively close.
