Abstract

Piles located in clay, sand, or a combination of various soil types indicate that time has
a significant effect on bearing capacity, or what is often referred as set up. The set up is
caused by two different effects, namely the removal of excess pore water pressure due to
piling and aging. Aging causes capacity to increase over time due to changes in the
characteristics of the soil frame, changes in the interaction between the pile and soil, or
changes in the structure of the soil around the pile. Δ10 is a factor that provides increased
bearing capacity. In the formula Skov and Denver (1988) and Bullock et al. (2005a, b),
Δ10 has a constant value. Meanwhile, Clausen and Aas (2000) argue that the set up
depends on soil properties, especially the plasticity index (Ip) and the overconsolidation
ratio (OCR). The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the time
after driving (t) to the bearing capacity of the pile (Q); comparing the value of the set up
factor (Δ10) using the formula Skov and Denver (1988), Bullock et al. (2005a, b), as well
as Clausen and Aas (2000); and calculate the possible alternative value of the new set
up factor (Δ10) which is more appropriate. This research was conducted using statistical
methods with Microsoft Excel and SPSS programs in the form of linear regression, One-
Way ANOVA, and hypothesis testing. In the end it can be proven that there is a strong
relationship between the time after erection (t) to the bearing capacity of the pile (Q),
where the bearing capacity of the clay soil to the pile can increase over time. The time
function proposed by Skov and Denver (1988) and Bullock et al. (2005a, b) provide a
better fit based on available data, while the model suggested by Clausen and Aas (2000)
gives the least suitable result. Then the value of Δ10 = 0.24 is predicted to be a more
appropriate alternative to the new set-up factor value based on the test data set in the
field
