Abstract

The main problem at the time of the earthquake is the damage and failure caused by poor
planning and ductality of the structure. One of the efforts that can be made to increase
ductality in reinforced concrete columns is to retrofit the plastic hinge area of the column
using easily available materials on the market such as wire mesh. The test specimen
consisted of 2 square columns of reinforced concrete with a size of 300 x 300 mm and on
one of the specimens was retrofit using a wire mesh the size of M6 on the approximate area
of the plastic hinge. Specimens tested with cyclic load based on displacement control
method. From the test results showed that the column that is retrofited with wire mesh in
the plastic hinge area has a much greater capacity to receive cyclic load compared to
columns that are not retrofit. In addition, the ductility value of the retrofited column with
wire mesh in the plastic hinge area increased from the column that was not retrofit.
